French roulette

French roulette

Did you know that French roulette is regarded as the queen of casino games? this is because it is one of the oldest casino games in the world. Apart from French roulette there is also European roulette and American roulette, but this page explains important information about French roulette only.

How do you play French roulette?

When you play French roulette, you place your betting chips on a green playing field with the 1 to 36, as well as the number 0 (zero) printed on it. It is possible to place bets on single chances in French roulette. For example on rouge and noir (red and black numbers), pair and impair (even and uneven numbers) and manqué or passé (the numbers 1-18 and 19-36). The roulette game is conducted under the guidance of a croupier who rolls the little ball into the roulette wheel.

French roulette vs. European roulette

You can compare French roulette to European roulette, however, you have fewer betting options in French roulette. The playing field (cloth) is set up differently and you will not see the neighbours game either in French roulette. Its winning chances are equal to those of European roulette.

History behind French roulette

How French roulette evolved exactly still remains a matter of discussion among many historians. Some say that the game has its roots in ancient China, where Chinese soldiers played a sadistic game with their captives who were tied up between two large wheels. Others date its origins back to Greek-Roman history where a turning wheel was very popular for gambling at that time (a form of wheel of Fortune).

The fact is that different events in history have led to the development of French roulette as we know it today. If we look at more recent history, the French mathematician Blaise Pascal stands out. He tried to create a wheel that would keep turning forever. Thus he unwittingly created the first roulette wheel. In 1842 the brothers Louis and Francois Blanc improved this wheel by adding a 0 to it, to make it interesting for the houses that offered the game of roulette.
